The Minnesota Association for Justice
Elects New President – Michael Hall, III
Michael Hall, III becomes 65th President of the Minnesota Association for Justice
Brainerd, Minn. – Twin Cities attorney Michael Hall, III was elected president of the Minnesota Association for Justice (MAJ) at the association’s annual convention, which took place on August 16, 2019 in Brainerd.
Michael is the lead attorney at Hall Law Personal Injury Attorneys, a firm of trial lawyers, dedicated to the service of their fellow Minnesotans. He is the son of St. Cloud trial lawyer and longtime MAJ member Mike Hall Sr.; the grandson of Minnesota lawyer and former Minnesota Speaker of the House, Lawrence M. Hall; and the brother of fellow lawyer and fellow MAJ member Gretchen Hall. As a representative of a third generation of Minnesota lawyers, Michael is part of a family, and a firm, that have deep roots in Central Minnesota, and the Twin Cities.
Upon assuming the precedency, Mr. Hall stated, “It is my honor to take the helm at the Minnesota Association for Justice, an association that stands for justice, fairness and the common good. At a time in our history when the individual rights of everyday citizens can sometimes be overlooked, I am proud to lead an organization that stands firmly on the side of the people of Minnesota.
The trial lawyer members of MAJ often take on the cause of the unluckiest among us; our friends, our neighbors, and our family members who have had the misfortune of being harmed by another’s wrongful or careless act. I am proud to be a member of an organization that does such important work.”
Hall notes that one of MAJ’s core missions is to protect every Minnesotan’s constitutional right to a trial by jury, and every citizen’s right to redress for the wrongs done to them. According to Hall, “When one of us is harmed by the wrongdoing of another, our civil justice system is designed to provide us with redress.
In other words, the system is designed to take that wrong and set it right. And, it is our shared right to trial by jury that makes our system function. Our citizen-juries serve as the conscience of our communities, saying what’s okay and what’s not okay.
They are tasked with recognizing the harms done to our fellow Minnesotans and making sure we do justice that truly respects and rebalances for those harms. At its most basic level, justice is about fairness.”
Mr. Hall strongly believes in MAJ’s long-standing commitment to our Constitution’s guarantee of justice and equal protections for all and has pledged to continue that mission during his one-year term as president.
In addition, he intends to use his time as president to help eliminate barriers that injured Minnesotans encounter when seeking justice in our court system, enhance the professional development of the association’s membership by providing diverse and cutting-edge legal education, and to ensure the sustainability of the association, which has been dedicated to these goals for more than 60 years.
Mr. Hall has received statewide recognition as a result of his courtroom victories on behalf of injured Minnesotans. He is among a very small group of trial lawyers who have obtained punitive damage judgments after a jury trial verdict.
Such damages are rare and awarded by juries to punish a defendant for committing knowingly reckless acts that deliberately disregard the safety of others.
From 1998 to 2006 he litigated personal injury and business litigation cases in Southern California. During his years of practice in California, Michael gained experience litigating cases for both plaintiffs and defendants, giving him a unique and valuable perspective on tort liability litigation. In 2006, Michael returned to Minnesota to join his father at Hall Law Personal Injury Attorneys
Michael holds an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Chicago (B.S., 1995), and a juris doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law (J.D., 1998).
He is admitted to practice in Minnesota, California, Federal District Court for the District of Minnesota and the Southern District of California, and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Born and raised in St. Cloud, MN, Michael now resides in Minneapolis with his wife and two young children.
