Firm History – Three Generations of Leadership
The Hall family has been practicing law in Minnesota for more than 75 years. After immigrating from Germany Matthew Hall settled in St. Cloud Minnesota where he started the Matthew Hall Lumber Company. Matthew was the father to a large family which included his son Lawrence M. Hall (aka “Duck”). Lawrence was born in 1908. He attended Cathedral High School in St. Cloud, then St. John’s University in Collegeville. Lawrence went on to obtain his law degree from Georgetown University Law School in Washington D.C.
After his return from Washington, Lawrence founded the law Firm Hall & Byers, which eventually became Hall, Byers, Hall & Hanson. Lawrence quickly became involved in politics and in 1934 he was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives. In 1939 Lawrence was named Speaker of the House. He was one of the youngest Speakers in Minnesota history and he served five terms, longer than any other person had until that time.
Lawrence left the Legislature in 1949, and became a lobbyist and legal counsel for the Minnesota Wine and Spirits Institute, which represented the state’s large liquor wholesalers. He was considered one of the most influential lobbyists at the Legislature. He was named chairman of the Metropolitan Airport Commission in 1953 by Republican Governor C. Elmer Anderson, and was reappointed to the post through the years by both Republican and DFL governors. In the late 1960’s, Lawrence led the drive to establish a second major Twin Cities airport near Ham Lake in Anoka County. The Ham Lake effort faltered after Lawrence became ill and had to resign in 1972. Lawrence passed away in 1973.
Mike Hall Sr., Lawrence Hall’s only son, was born and raised in St. Cloud, MN. Mike attended Cathedral High School, then St. Thomas College in St. Paul, MN. Mike went on to obtain his law degree from the University of Minnesota in 1969. IN 1970 Mike joined his father Lawrence at the Hall & Byers firm. Mike served as the St. Cloud City Prosecutor from approximately 1970 through 1975. During that period he also conducted criminal prosecutions on behalf of Stearns County. He acted as legal counsel for LeSauk Township from 1973 through 1979. He served as counsel for the St. Cloud Catholic Diocese from 1973 through 1978. In 1979 Mike left Hall & Byers to form what is now the law firm of Hall Law P.A. Since 1979 Mike has increasingly focused on the litigating personal injury cases on behalf of people who need his expertise. For more detail on Mike Hall Sr. click here.
Michael Hall, III, is the current leader of Hall Law P.A. Michael attended St. John’s Prep in Collegeville Minnesota. He holds an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Chicago (B.S., 1995), and a juris doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law (J.D., 1998). Michael tried and won his first jury trial in 1998; just six months after becoming a lawyer. From 1998 to 2006 Michael litigated personal injury and business litigation cases in Southern California. In 2006, Michael returned to Minnesota to join Hall Law, P.A. Michael has expanded the practice to include locations in Minneapolis, Edina and St. Cloud. For more on Michael, see his bio.
